What we do

We travel to historical sites across India, document places and physical evidence, speak with local custodians and guides, and compare those accounts with inscriptions, archaeology, geography, and published research. We distinguish lipi (inscribed or physical evidence) from nambikke (living belief and oral tradition).

Current investigations

  • Rishimukha and Jatayu: local memory, the Jatayu hill near Jatinga-Rameshwara, and the Rishimukha cave tradition.
  • Rama's two trails: the proposed flight route and a possible ground route along the Kaveri toward Rameswaram.
  • Brahmagiri: Ashokan edicts, the surrounding landscape, and the older traditions attached to the hill.
  • Chitradurga: Mahabharata traditions, temples, caves, and the distinction between story and material record.

Most visitors reach the temple at the top of Anjanadri Hill, near Hampi, by climbing 575 steep steps. During the December tourist season, the main route was packed with tourists. But our ASI guide knew another way. The back route to Anjanadri Hill He took us on a back route, a second set of steps that was almost completely empty. Then the steps ended in rocks that we had to cross. From there, we had to cross a crevice and climb over the rocks. In places, it felt like a small adventure course.
